What is the Tutor Program and How Does It Work?
What is a Tutor?
The children can just spend time with their Tutor talking in a different language. This way, tutoring is seen as a joyful activity rather than sitting in front of books the whole day. Nonetheless, there is no age limit (different to the Au Pair program). So, not only students can participate even if this is the usual case.Free Registration as Family

Is there any salary?
However, if both parties agree on baby-sitting, which will be compensated in monetary terms, please remember that taxes and social security contributions have to be paid and a special visa will be required when being abroad. Please note that you cannot earn money while being on a tourist visa.
Are Tutors entitled to have holidays?
Who should pay for the travel expenses?
What kind of visa should be issued?
As a consequence, the program can offer you the ideal opportunity to spend some time in another country at very low costs. But if you need a visa to enter the country, we recommend to apply for a tourist visa. In this case, you can stay up to three months in most countries but please note that you cannot earn money during this time. This would even be illegal under the tourist visa scheme.
Do Tutors have to attend a language course?
Tutor agreement
Moreover, the contract is not obligatory but we highly recommend to have an agreement in a written form just to make sure that everything is clear between the host and the candidate. AuPair.com offers a contract template which you can also use for your stay. You can download it for free here.

What are the differences between a Tutor and an Au Pair?
The most striking difference might be the program’s conditions: as an Au Pair you take care of children and become a family member. You work 20-30 hours in average per week and receive a monthly pocket money. A Tutor is treated more like a guest and solely teaches a language or another matter. He/ she does that only for a few hours per week depending on the agreement and does not receive any payment.
What are the differences between a Tutor and a Nanny?
Nonetheless, both programs share some tasks. Both Tutor and Nanny spend time with an individual. But a Nanny also carries out some light household chores and plays with the children whereas a Tutor is focussed more on conveying the language.
- Can an Au Pair have a second job?
-
It depends. If the Au Pair is an EU citizen and is staying within the EU, then he/she can have another job. For the rest of the cases, it depends on the visa the Au Pair holds, the amount of hours she already works and the specific labour laws of the Host Country.
- Can you help me with the paperwork and the placement process?
-
Unfortunately, we can’t help you with it. We are an online matching agency, thus we can’t interfere in your searching or placing process. We are happy to provide you with all our searching and matching tools and the information about the Au Pair experience. As our platform is available worldwide, we are unable to take care of all the applications we get daily. Feel free to use our service to visit your dream destination and find a great Host Family. We will be also glad to get your feedback! If you have any ideas or comments, get in touch with us.
- Is this a volunteer platform?
-
No, AuPair.com is an online matching agency. We are solely matching Host Families and caregivers, be it for children or seniors, who need to meet a list of requirements. We do not organize volunteer stays, and we don’t provide your contacts to volunteer platforms.
- How to find a family?
-
Once you are signed in as a candidate, you can start searching for Host Families in different countries. The platform gives you the opportunity to browse families that match your preferences and destinations. In addition to AuPair.com's suggestions, you can add other families to your Favorites. This way you will have a selected list of users you are interested in. Each added family will receive a notification.
You can also send free requests to Host Families of your choice. They will receive your application and can accept or deny your profile. Try to get in touch with 20-30 families per day to speed up the matching process and shortlist the most suitable options. If you reach 100% in your activity level, you can see which Host Families are Premium.
- How long does it take to find a family?
-
It depends on several factors. Create your profile and make it attractive for other users. Be active and contact 20-30 Host Families per day. While contacting the Host Families, make also sure that you fulfil the family’s expectations. Be active, open minded and try to convince families that the time spent with you will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Generally speaking, it takes from one week up to a few months to find a Host Family.
- I want to travel and learn a new language.
-
Then the Au Pair program is the perfect fit for you! It is an international cultural exchange that gives the possibility to young people to spend some time abroad, learn more about a different culture, improve their skills in a foreign language in exchange for help with duties related to childcare. The term “au pair” from French means “on equal terms”, signifying that Au Pair and Host Family treat each other as equals. Check out our guide “How to become an Au Pair?” for more information.
